History:
Nathan Ford – former insurance fraud investigator
for IYS Insurance and the team's mastermind. The son
of South Boston numbers runner Jimmy Ford,[5] Nate
originally intended to become a Catholic priest,
spending a short period in seminary prior to
becoming an insurance investigator. While working
for IYS, Nate's young son became seriously ill; IYS
refused to pay for the experimental treatment
needed, resulting in his death. The aftermath leads
to Nate's drinking, his divorce from his wife
Maggie, and his subsequent dismissal from the
company.
A skilled planner, Nate draws on
his experience as an insurance investigator to
anticipate the moves of his team's marks. Nate has
the privilege of selecting what clients the team
helps, and he often acts as their direct liaison to
the team. He initially operates behind the scenes,
but becomes an active participant in the team's cons
playing a wide variety of roles from leading his own
grift attempts to serving as a distraction for the
others to carry out their work. Nate is at first a
very likable and talkative man, but is unwilling to
talk about his own problems, even becoming quick to
anger anytime the subject changes to his son's
death. He is talented at playing characters and
inserting himself into any situation, but he also
has problems controlling his passions, as well as
his drinking. But, when it comes to the latter, he
is finally showing signs of recovery.
Throughout the first season, his drinking remains
problematic, even after he goes through detox during
a con in a rehab center. For the first half of the
second season, Nate is sober, having substituted
coffee for alcohol, but begins drinking again after
being forced to have a drink to maintain his cover
during a con. Nate has continuing issues with
control, and the effects of his past demons and his
increasingly complicated relationship with Sophie
are still unresolved. Though he always claimed he
wasn't a thief throughout the series, at the very
end of the second season he finally proclaimed, "My
name is Nathan Ford, and I am a thief."
